the area

Cycling

The area is renowned for its road riding and mountain biking in Wombat State forest. Spend a day cycling between towns, getting to know the forest trails or on a bike tour of the region. Russell and his team at Woodend Cycles are at the end of our street.

Hiking

Discover the beautiful Mount Macedon walking trails, with levels suited to all abilities. Hanging Rock is another fantastic place to visit, with an interesting Visitor Centre and a walk to the top which rewards beautiful views out over the town of Newham and the Cobaw Ranges to the North.

Eat + Drink

Stroll up the road to Holgate’s Brewery, where you can find a selection of locally brewed craft beers on tap. Catch the Woodend Farmers’ market every first Saturday of the month for fresh local produce and head to one of the many cafes lining the main street. Our other favourites are the fantastically named Sizzler Restobar for great Indian and an always welcoming smile from Sam the owner (home delivery – yum!) or a short drive to the next township of Macedon for sensational wood-fired pizza from Ida Red.

Wineries & Distilleries

Wineries abound in our area, with several literally just up the road: Mt Macedon Winery, the renowned Hanging Rock Winery, Mount Towrong and Paramoor Farm as a starting point, or simply begin with some local wines from Woodend Wine Store, next to Holgate’s hotel.

Explore our best local gin distillers at Big Tree, Mount Towrong or Animus.
